Summary

In 1715, Lady Blythe Hedley's father is declared an enemy of the British crown because of his Jacobite sympathies, forcing her to flee her home in northern England。 Secreted to the tower of Wedderburn Castle in Scotland, Lady Blythe awaits who will ultimately be crowned king。 But in a house with seven sons and numerous servants, her presence soon becomes known。

No sooner has Everard Hume lost his father, Lord Wedderburn, than Lady Hedley arrives with the clothes on her back and her mistress in tow。 He has his own problems--a volatile brother with dangerous political leanings, an estate to manage, and a very young brother in need of comfort and direction in the wake of losing his father。 It would be best for everyone if he could send this misfit heiress on her way as soon as possible。

Drawn into a whirlwind of intrigue, shifting alliances, and ambitions, Lady Blythe must be careful whom she trusts。 Her fortune, her future, and her very life are at stake。 Those who appear to be adversaries may turn out to be allies--and those who pretend friendship may be enemies。

I started reading this book and it was a bit hard for me。 It was a slow start。 But, I continued reading and am glad I did。 I really enjoy historical fiction and this was a part of history that I had not read much about。 I was interested also by the geography and my ancestors are from England and Scotland。I felt that the two main characters were nicely filled out。 The sub-characters were also easy to identify with if not as fully rounded out。 The story flowed quite well and kept my interest once I started reading this book and it was a bit hard for me。 It was a slow start。 But, I continued reading and am glad I did。 I really enjoy historical fiction and this was a part of history that I had not read much about。 I was interested also by the geography and my ancestors are from England and Scotland。I felt that the two main characters were nicely filled out。 The sub-characters were also easy to identify with if not as fully rounded out。 The story flowed quite well and kept my interest once I got past the beginning。What I did not like was the ending felt rushed。 There were also a couple of things that did not get tied up。 I wish there had been an epilogue to address a couple of issues left dangling。Overall I give this 4 out of 5 stars。 I was given an ARC of this book through the Revell Reads program。 And even with this being an ARC, the editing was very well done。 。。。more

I honestly had a hard time getting into this because there is so much going on and I was interrupted a lot。 I will definitely be trying again because what did register was beautiful and I need to read it again to get the whole story! Better review coming later…

Laura is a friend--with whom I apparently share some close genealogy--and I learned a lot about my Scottish ancestry from this novel!I had no idea of the juxtaposition of the French revolution with other international political activities--particularly within the Stuart monarchy and Scottish nationalism in the early 19th century。 Laura puts them into the context of a story with many dangerous twists。I read this book in two, happy, days。

I loved this historical fiction romance。 I loved Lady Blythe and Everard。 I loved reading about the Jacobites during this unsettled period of time。 I loved the intrigue in this story。 I also loved the romance as Blythe and Everard got to know each other。 I enjoyed that this took place mainly in Scotland。 I could not put this book down。 I received a copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will。

Really enjoyed the slow burn。 The perspective shifts were confusing, as was the flip-flopping between Lady Hedley and Lady Blythe。 But the history was interesting and the romance rewarding。

I absolutely adored this story。 I feel like each book gets better and better。Laura writes wonderfully, strong men as well as bonnie, smart lasses! This is my first Laura Frantz book and I am blown away! The writing was so descriptive and immersive。 I've always been a big fan of Scotland and this not only fed my love of all things Scottish but gave me such a deep appreciation of what Scotland has been through。From start to finish I could not put this book down。 Just when I thought there would be a slight lull to let me sleep or do some household chores I was pulled back in by something or other happening。 I loved the amount of suspense and This is my first Laura Frantz book and I am blown away! I am sure the intensive research required by a novel of this quality was pure pleasure for author Laura Frantz as she visited France and Scotland, including Wedderburn Castle, the home of her Hume ancestors。 The Rose and the Thistle includes a great deal of Hume history combined with Frantz's flair for creating a wonderful historical romance。 The story is set in the time leading up to and including the Jacobite uprising of 1715, a time when families were sometimes split by their loyalties。 Lady I am sure the intensive research required by a novel of this quality was pure pleasure for author Laura Frantz as she visited France and Scotland, including Wedderburn Castle, the home of her Hume ancestors。 The Rose and the Thistle includes a great deal of Hume history combined with Frantz's flair for creating a wonderful historical romance。 The story is set in the time leading up to and including the Jacobite uprising of 1715, a time when families were sometimes split by their loyalties。 Lady Blythe Hedley's Jacobite father works to protect her from the repercussions of his political leanings, imposing on an old family connection with the Hume family, much to the consternation of the new laird, the Earl of Wedderburn。 Readers will be intrigued by the power, responsibility, and function of the hierarchy of nobility's role in this story。 They will be captivated by the grandeur of the castles and landscapes, and they will be charmed by many of the residents of Wedderburn Castle。 I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of The Rose and the Thistle from Revell via LibraryThing without obligation。 All opinions expressed here are my own。 。。。more

I don’t like the miscommunication trope at all, but any time something remotely reeked of it, the situation was approached with decorum and maturity。 It was a breath of fresh air to read a book with mature characters, yes they are in their late to early thirties, but they actually acted like it。 And the romance was so pure and sweet! What started out as enemies soon turned into lovers in the most beautiful way。 I also love how this book’s focus wasn’t solely on the romance, either。 It had family and friendships, war tactics and politics, suspense and depth, the divide between Protestantism and Catholicism (which I thought was handled well)。 There was just so much to love。All in all, I give this a full 5/5 stars! Well done, Laura! I look forward to reading more from you。Content:Closed door romance—the couple is married and intimacy is implied, but you see nothing。Mentions of infidelity。No language。Minor war violence。*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell。 All thoughts expressed are my own* 。。。more

With vivid details and a well written plot, Ms。 Frantz sweeps you up in the lives and perilous times of Lady Blythe and Lord Everard。 It was easy to understand the conflict that Blythe and Everard experienced and to be torn to support family and their cause, but also to have a civic duty to the monarch that was on the throne。 Being a descendant of those that were involved in the conflict made this story all that more special to read。 As soon as I finished I wanted to read it again。I highly recom With vivid details and a well written plot, Ms。 Frantz sweeps you up in the lives and perilous times of Lady Blythe and Lord Everard。 It was easy to understand the conflict that Blythe and Everard experienced and to be torn to support family and their cause, but also to have a civic duty to the monarch that was on the throne。 Being a descendant of those that were involved in the conflict made this story all that more special to read。 As soon as I finished I wanted to read it again。I highly recommend this book and would love to see this made into a movie。 If you enjoy Christian historical novels you will want to read this book。 I received a complimentary copy of this book。 I was not expected to write a positive review。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

When Blythe Hedley returns home from the French court, she discovers that her father, the Earl of Northumberland, is far more enmeshed in the Jacobite cause than suspected。 With the new Hanoverian king installed in London, the Jacobites are agitating to bring back the Stuart king from over the water。 Blythe’s father sends her for safekeeping to the Scottish castle of her godfather, the Earl of Wedderburn。 But the only trouble is that the old earl has just passed away, and it’s his imposing son E When Blythe Hedley returns home from the French court, she discovers that her father, the Earl of Northumberland, is far more enmeshed in the Jacobite cause than suspected。 With the new Hanoverian king installed in London, the Jacobites are agitating to bring back the Stuart king from over the water。 Blythe’s father sends her for safekeeping to the Scottish castle of her godfather, the Earl of Wedderburn。 But the only trouble is that the old earl has just passed away, and it’s his imposing son Everard who holds the title now。Dismayed to be saddled with a strong-willed English heiress who is both Catholic and a Jacobite, Everard Hume insists on keeping Blythe’s presence at the castle a secret。 But as she begins to tutor his young brother Orin, Everard begins to appreciate her learning, her elegance, and her wisdom。 As feelings grow, he begins to consider Northumberland’s offer of a marriage alliance, but he must deal with Blythe’s doubts of his affection for her and the English king’s own doubts of his loyalty。Throughout the story, Blythe must contend with insecurities about her appearance (she is considered plain by many) as well as insecurity about her mother’s shameful role as mistress to one of the previous English kings。 The religious divide between her and Everard is far greater than one might suppose as a marriage between them would be impossible without one of them renouncing their faith to marry in the other’s church。 Everard, gruff and intimidating, must learn to communicate with an English lady unused to his Scottish ways, discovering that a lady’s country of origin is perhaps far less important than her adherence to true principles, kind words, and godly action。In true Laura Frantz style, this story is told with sophisticated and sometimes archaic vocabulary; however, a glossary is provided at the beginning to help with the Scottish phrases that pepper the dialogue。 As is also common in Laura Frantz’s stories, the tale does not wrap up with a neat “happily ever after” once the hero and heroine declare their love for each other; the story arc requires continued grit and fidelity until the historical crisis is resolved。 While most of Frantz’s books are set in early America, a few of her other books have taken place in Scotland–a setting I much prefer。 This period of history, with the installation of the first Hanover king, is a relatively new one for me, and I found the politics of the time as fascinating as the personal interplay between the main characters。A well-spun tale of courage and conviction, this book will delight fans of Laura Frantz’s work and those interested in an intricate romance that remains faithful the historical setting。Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this title from the author via NetGalley。 All opinions expressed in this review are my own。 。。。more

“Silk and fire dinna mix well。”“Neither do we, milord。”“Good things come to those who wait。” This summarizes my thoughts on The Rose and the Thistle by Laura Frantz。 First of all, I (and many other Frantz fans) have been waiting over a year for this latest offering from Frantz, a highly skilled author who writes excellent, authentic historical romantic fiction。I had to wait in another regard。 This is one of the few Frantz novels that I have not been enamored with from the start。 However, as I ke “Silk and fire dinna mix well。”“Neither do we, milord。”“Good things come to those who wait。” This summarizes my thoughts on The Rose and the Thistle by Laura Frantz。 First of all, I (and many other Frantz fans) have been waiting over a year for this latest offering from Frantz, a highly skilled author who writes excellent, authentic historical romantic fiction。I had to wait in another regard。 This is one of the few Frantz novels that I have not been enamored with from the start。 However, as I kept reading, I eventually got so caught up in the intrigue of the divided loyalties and the beauty of the impossible romance that I give this book five stars。 I tend to rate books by how completely sated my reading soul is when I finish。 Let me say, I am well-satisfied with the faith factor, enemies-to-lovers romance and political suspense。 Don’t forget the appeal of a child!!Which brings me to my last point。 Frantz, through Lady Blythe Hedley and Lord Everard Hume, teaches me several things through Scripture and its application。 I used one quote last night in my own life。 “Prayer may be the best weapon we have。” What an immense relief as I relax my own troubled mind and realize “God’s got this” as I pray for my personal heartache。 God is indeed in control。 Thank you for the reminder, Ms。 Frantz!!And as I talked to a person dear to me today, I referred to another quote。 “Tell me something good about her…Surely there are praiseworthy things about her, as she was made in the Lord’s image。” Sometimes we can only see the negatives in another person, and yet, even the worst person is made in God’s image。 If we look hard enough, we can find good in almost all people。 I received a copy of the book from the publisher, plus I bought a couple of copies to share。 No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own。 。。。more

This book is full of history! Lady Blythe Hedley is English and somewhat of a Jacobite sympathizer but her father is being sought by the crown which makes Blythe run to Wedderburn Castle in Scotland。 Her father set up that she would go there in case anything happened。 Everard Hume has just become the new Lord Wedderburn after his fathers passing。 Even before is father is laid to rest Blythe and her ladies maid show up。 Now he has to hide them on top of everything else。 However it is not easy when he has 5 brothers around and Blythe sneaks out to the garden in the middle of the night。 Orin, the youngest brother, discovers her and then she is revealed to the other brothers and becomes Orins teacher of sorts。 Everard and Blythe don’t get along too well at first but soon that changes。 Really enjoyed this book and the characters。 Great story, Christian elements throughout, clean and I definitely recommend!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author。 All views expressed are only my honest opinion。 。。。more

Laura Frantz’s books are amazing! She really knows how to make history come alive。 Not only do you feel like you’ve been transported back in time, but the characters become so real it’s hard to let them go。 The Rose and the Thistle is no exception and has to be one of my favorites of her books。 It’s one I’ll want to reread and savor。 It’s the year 1715 and the Duke of Northumbria’s Jacobite sympathies have made him an enemy to the English King。 He calls his daughter Lady Blythe home from France Laura Frantz’s books are amazing! I absolutely adored Blythe and Everard。 Everard is everything a hero is meant to be。 Not only is he absolutely swoon worthy with that Scottish brogue, but his dry sense of humor, leadership, strength, and tenderness are so endearing。 I also loved that he has strong faith and isn’t afraid to show it。 I loved Blythe’s character as well。 She’s faithful, smart, humble, and quick witted。 She’s a bit self consciousness about her height, and her mother’s past which weighs on her。 The attraction and love she feels towards Everard make her afraid she’ll turn out to be like her mother。 It was so enjoyable when she finally allows herself to believe in Everard’s love。 I also enjoyed her spunk and all the verbal repartee with Everard。There’re some great twists and turns in this story that about tore my heart out。 It’s one of those epic slow burn romances that pulls you in and won’t let go。 All the characters are fabulous especially the brothers and I can’t wait to read more about them。 The history behind the story is fascinating。 It was interesting to learn that this book is based on the author’s own ancestors。 I loved the famous quotes at the beginning of each chapter and the way faith was naturally woven into the story。 The historical religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants was a key issue which the author handled so well。 Highly recommend this book to historical fiction, historical romance, and Christian fiction readers。 Looking forward to the next book! I enjoyed the interactions among the Hume brothers, especially sweet Orin。 This author has a way of not only making history come alive, but does so by beautifully weaving facts with fiction to create engaging and compelling stories。 I look forward to each new book Laura Frantz writes and close the book with a happy sigh at its conclusion。 The only problem is waiting for her next book to come out!I received an advanced reader copy from the author and publisher。 I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed here are mine alone。 。。。more
